""This past year the United States witnessed a measles epidemic that was the largest in more than a decade. About 135 people, mostly children, were infected with measles; some of those children were hospitalized with severe dehydration and others with pneumonia caused by the virus. Why did this happen?" First Autism-Vaccine Link: Hannah Poling
Written by Allison Young of the Atlanta Journal.

"In a move autism family advocates call unprecedented, federal health officials have concluded that childhood vaccines contributed to symptoms of the disorder in a 9-year-old Georgia girl. While government officials continue to maintain that vaccines don't cause autism, advocates say the recent settlement of the girl's injury case in a secretive federal vaccine court shows otherwise." Faith Dyson, Cultural Arts Director for Project America Foundation, does not believe the much-publicized Institute of Medicine report issued on May 18 that claims there is no link between immunizations and autism.  Faith agrees with the National Autism Association's reply that cites "strong clinical evidence from accredited doctors and researchers that suggests otherwise."

The Appalling Poling Saga

"
As is customary in scientific papers, the authors acknowledge limitations of their analysis, such as the possibility that their data might have been skewed by false-positive laboratory results. However, although it is also customary for authors to disclose potential conflicts of interest, the published article includes no mention of the fact that co-author Dr. Jon Poling is the father of the child described in the report, and that he, his wife and daughter are petitioners in Poling v. HHS (Case 02-1466V), a pending Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) claim involving exactly the matters described in it. (According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the average VICP award amount totaled approximately $1 million at the time Dr. and Mrs. Poling filed their petition for compensation.)" Study Links Autism, Vaccines
Written by John Brodkin

"Autism diagnoses have dropped nationwide since mercury was removed from most childhood vaccines, according to a new study that some say lends credence to charges that vaccinations were responsible for a huge increase in autism cases. About 4,700 families -- including ones from Framingham and Waltham -- have pending claims in a federal vaccine court alleging that mercury in vaccines caused their children to develop autism.

The allegations are controversial and viewed with skepticism by many government officials and medical professionals. But supporters of a vaccine-autism link say a new report in the peer reviewed Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons proves that the removal of mercury from vaccines has led to a decrease in autism cases." Is the Rise in Autism Rates Real?
Written by Stephen Novella, NeuroLogica Blog

"It is without controversy that the number of autism diagnoses being made is on the rise. In 1991 there were about 6 cases per 10,000 births, and in 2001 there were about 42. This number continues to rise at about the same rate."
