Don't Bite The Dog:
Beyond the blog

Your Resource for all things Autism

Who are we?

Amber (DBTD)

I am a stay at home mom of two adorable kids. I would like to be employed by some huge fancy farm that would let me harass their horses in the name of training, and pay me the big bucks for doing so... But alas, that is unlikely to happen unless I move out of this little town in North Carolina. My spare time goes into this site, and my blogs.

I am currently a student, beginning the path to a BA in Special Education! However, please don't think that will mean the site is neglected, it's just another step towards doing something worthwhile with my life. I think that the things I'll learn will add a lot of the more educational aspect into this site as well.

I do not believe vaccinations cause Autism. I do believe that some kids will have a reaction to vaccines, and that they can cause illness. I believe that the current schedule is excessive for certain children, and my pediatrician and I work together to work out a staggered vaccination schedule for my daughter, so we do not overload her with too many vaccines at once.

I strive to make this site as unbiased and balanced as possible, however in my blog I have and will state my opinion regarding vaccines.

I place my faith in the many wonderful interventions available through Speech therapy, Occupational therapy, ABA therapy, DTT, and other proven methods however my mind has become much more open to considering certain biomedical treatment perspectives as well.

Jaymes

Jaymes is 5 now, and is autistic. He's a tiny little guy for his age, and due to some eczema he is rather scaly and reptilian at this time.  He generally needs a haircut, but the shaggy dog look goes very well on him and haircuts are a major struggle, so we avoid them as much as we can get away with.

Jaymes loves horses, and riding. He also loves trains, especially those pricey Thomas sets that cost way to much and break way too easily. Halloween is his favorite day of the year, and pumpkins make his little heart swell with joy.

Sierra

Sierra just turned 3 in September, and is a little shoe diva. She owns more shoes herself than the rest of us combined. And it's not mommy wanting shoes for her, it's her seeing a shoe store or the shoe area at Walmart and bolting toward them singing "shoeeees!"

Sierra is also a shopper, which I suspect she gets from her father, as I am not. Sierra loves to go to the mall, particularly the Puppy Store. Sierra is a huge animal person. She's best buddies with our dog, Echo, and loves every other animal you can think of. Our cat despises her. Sierra enjoys riding my Racking Horse mare, Lucy and spending time with her grandma.

Jason
AKA The Hubby

Jason and I have been married for 5 years. We met online (GASP!) and actually had our very first "date" on Christmas day, out in a horse pasture in Punta Gorda, FL, where I got him to brush my filthy white horse without complaint. That pretty much sealed it for me, a non-horseman who will scrape mud off a white horse in the middle of nowhere on a first date... Impressive to say the least.

Jason is a Direct Service Provider with a company that serves foster children with mental health diagnoses. He is extremely dedicated to his job, and thus is away a lot of the time. Sierra clings to him and doesn't want a thing to do with me when daddy is home!

Note: I, unlike a lot of people, do not use pseudonyms online. I know the safety issues involved with publishing names and photos online, and do not need to be lectured about it ( :
